In recent months, Mexican employers have been adjusting to the requirements of the so-called “Chair Law” (Ley Silla), a regulation aimed at improving working conditions for employees who spend long periods standing. Effective since June 2025, with complementary health and safety guidelines released in July 2025, the law is designed to promote both safety and comfort in the workplace.

Although the legislation initially focused on the retail sector, its implications extend to businesses across all industries. Companies are encouraged to review their work environments to determine whether staff are required to stand for more than three consecutive hours. Conducting such assessments and keeping a record of the findings demonstrates diligence and a commitment to employee well-being.

The law does not require employees to remain seated for the entirety of their shift. Rather, its aim is to prevent prolonged standing, which can lead to fatigue, musculoskeletal strain, and other health concerns. Workplaces where sitting is unsafe due to the nature of the tasks should provide employees with designated areas to rest during breaks, ensuring that health risks are minimized without interfering with workflow.

In addition to providing seating options, employers can take other measures to reduce the physical strain of standing work. Ergonomic footwear can help mitigate fatigue, and cushioned flooring—such as mats, carpets, or anti-fatigue surfaces—can significantly improve comfort. These measures not only align with regulatory expectations but also foster a more productive and supportive work environment.

The Chair Law represents a shift toward prioritizing employee health in Mexican workplaces. By evaluating workstations, allowing appropriate breaks, and implementing ergonomic solutions, organizations can ensure compliance while creating safer and more comfortable conditions for their teams.

Mexico’s “Ley Silla” (Chair Law) was published in the Official Federal Gazette (Diario Oficial de la Federación) on December 19, 2024. Find official document here.
